FACT

On June 7, 1944, there were 66 WASP who were qualified to fly fighter planes.

Pilots check their flight schedules.

In March 1944, Jackie starting sending WASP to 48 bases around the country specifically to fly broken and repaired airplanes. These included planes with issues documented by flight instructors or students. Some men refused to fly these planes due to the risk unless they were in combat.

Throughout their service, WASP piloted all 78 or so types of airplanes flown during World War II. The PT-17 Stearman was one of the first trainers. It was an open-cockpit biplane for two. Avenger Field also had the UC-78 Bamboo Bomber, which was a closed-cockpit trainer. Two WASP eventually flew the B-29 Superfortress, America’s newest bomber at the time.
